12TH Annual Comcast America’s Children’s Holiday Parade From Oakland, California set for Saturday, December 3rd

The parade will march up the streets of Oakland, stepping off at 2 p.m. at 11th and Broadway, working its way up to 20th and Broadway, and then turning right to Lake Merritt.
Last year the parade set records, and more of the same is expected in 2011. Last year’s event not only contained more than 100 units – more than ever before – but it also had a record number of marching bands (22), including one of the largest bands in California (Reedley High School from Reedley, California), a record number of children’s cartoon and storybook characters (42), and a record number of large balloons (17). It also featured a marching band from Guatemala, the first time a band from outside the United States had appeared.
Other highlights from last year that will also appear in 2011 include children’s characters Cat in the Hat, the Berenstain Bears, Snoopy and Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang, the Tap Dancing Christmas Trees, and of course Santa himself.
For the last number of years more than 100,000 people have lined the streets in downtown Oakland to see the beautiful floats, enormous balloons and marching bands.
The parade is one of only three Christmas parades in America to be broadcast nationally. This year it will be picked up by PBS throughout the country and in parts of Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam, as well as by stations throughout California. It will also be broadcast to 175 countries via the American Forces Network and broadcast locally by KTVU Channel 2 and KQED in the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Area, by KTEH in San Jose, and by Comcast and Peralta TV.
The parade was founded and is managed by the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
The Comcast America’s Children’s Holiday Parade is also a holiday championship for the marching band circuit, sanctioned by the Northern California Band Association.
The parade truly is a national event, with parade items, entries and volunteers coming in from a number of different states, and from as far away as New York, New Jersey, Virginia, South Carolina, Hawaii and Guatemala.
