The Nia Center of Long Island New York Announces Plans for Expansion and More Classes to Meet Growing Enthusiasm for Nia
The Nia Center of Long Island New York Announces Plans for Expansion and More Classes to Meet Growing Enthusiasm for Nia
Wading River, New York (PRWEB) April 11, 2012
Nia (pronounced Nee-ah) is a one hour, bare-foot, moving, cardiovascular dance exercise program that blends the dance arts, the martial arts (tae kwan do and aikido), and the healing arts (tai chi, chi gong, yoga and meditation), into a series of steps and stances set to music. It was developed to increase strength, flexibility and endurance, and is suitable for everybody, whatever their fitness level may be. In fact, those who have tried Nia have loved it so much that it is spreading around NY like wildfire.
Nia instructor, Patti Ann Bengen, operates The Nia Center LINY, and has been teaching the program for twelve years. However, this amazing program was created thirty years ago by fitness gurus, Debbie and Carlos Rosas.
Bengen reports, “There is nothing like this program out there.” Students, regardless of age and gender, enjoy the flowing movements and the fifty-two steps incorporated into this life-changing program. The instructor serves as a guide for movements and to assist the student in maximizing benefits. Nia is not a competitive program, so students are free to move in their own natural way and to stay within their unique comfort levels while still getting an amazing workout.
Students are lost in a world of creative sensation, clearing their minds to concentrate on areas of the body that they feel they need to improve. This hour of class time is reserved exclusively for each student, and they quickly learn to leave every other thought out of the studio.
Bengen says, “Nia teaches you to come home to your body, and to get to know your body – what feels good, and what does not. Gone are the old tapes exploring the “no pain – no gain” theory. There are no fitness requirements in order to practice Nia, only the desire to make the changes in yourself. It makes no difference how students find out about Nia, only that they make the commitment to themselves in order to experience the multitude of advantages that this amazing program has to offer.”
She emphasized further that the best part of this program is finding the joy in movement. “It all starts from within and works its way out. One needs to feel good inside, and in order for that to happen, one needs to be in tune with the body.”
Bengen noticed that students began to experience increased core strength. At the end of class, although they may be soaked with perspiration, students will not feel as if they have been run over by a truck, and that their muscles and joints need something short of a miracle to recover before attending the next session. That is not a Nia experience. Rather, participants will feel strengthened and flexible, energized, and have skin that glows.
In an effort to spread the word about the benefits of the Nia Program, Bengen now hosts a cable television show on the east end of Long Island, “The Nia Fitness Show.”
She says, “I am reaching out to the surrounding communities and hope that people will start practicing Nia with me from their homes. If they are close enough, then maybe they will come to the studio to experience a live class, and if that is not possible, then the steps they take to turn the show on may be the most beneficial steps they could take.” Also, plans are now coming together to expand The Nia Center of LINY to Manhattan.
Nia is a worldwide network and classes are available around the globe. Contact world headquarters at http://www.nianow.com. Call toll free @ 888-416-6788 or contact the studio directly at 631-886-1457.

Nashville Business Woman and Oasis Center Board Member Recognized For Leadership in Supporting Nashville Youth
Nashville Business Woman and Oasis Center Board Member Recognized For Leadership in Supporting Nashville Youth
Nashville, TN (PRWEB) November 1, 2007
Genma Stringer Holmes is one of the very few non-profit board members who has advocated ideas that are sufficiently original to alter the direction of a nationally recognized, award-winnng non-profit youth organization, the Oasis Center.
Parallel to raising $ 240,000 in individual gifts for the Oasis Center, she is opening higher education doors for economically challenged African American youth, encouraging the strategic success of her teenage daughter’s cottage business and recruiting African American role models to work with middle school prevention groups.
In just a few conversations with the president of Georgetown College, Dr. Bill Crouch, she secured a four-year scholarship for an Oasis Center youth. One of her latest accomplishments is obtaining the needed funding for creating a new music program for the non-profit’s new $ 7 million Youth Opportunity Center.
Taking notice of Holmes’ accomplishments, the Southeastern Network of Youth and Family Services will be recognizing Holmes with the prestigious non-profit board member of the year award. More than 80 non-profit organizations are represented by the Southeastern Network of Youth and Family services.
“The simple act of giving is powerful,” said Holmes. “Whether you are a business person, engineer or teacher, to be a citizen in today’s world means giving back, as our world is becoming more interdependent and our youth represent our future.”
Genma’s leadership on the Oasis Center board has fostered unprecedented organizational growth and brand recognition. Yet, Holmes’ appreciation for the Oasis Center is more personal than the conventional board member. The organization supported her family through a difficult time in 2005. Not only did the Oasis Center bring her family closer together, the Holmes’ family has made a life-long commitment to supporting the organization and its outreach efforts for developing Nashville’s youth.
Through mom’s support, her daughter, Alexis has donated $ 25,000 of her business’ proceeds from “Alexis’ Famous Pies” to the Oasis Center’s youth shelter programs. In 2006, Alexis was named Youth Philanthropist of the Year for her contributions to the Oasis Center.
As a leading proponent of the Oasis Center, Genma has educated and brought together thousands of people in the community through local United Way presentations, various faith based gatherings and at national business conferences.
